Five Effective Ways to Achieve Headache Relief
Many of us experience headaches from time to time and as such are seeking effective ways of achieving headache relief. But there are people who experience this more often than it should be and the pain is more excruciating than what most of us feel. A headache is a condition of mild severe pain in the head. Sometimes the pain seems to come from the upper back or at the neck. Most of these headaches are due to tension, migraine, or a combination of the two.
There are three types of headaches: the primary headaches, the secondary headaches, and neuralgias and other headaches. Under the primary headaches, these include migraine, tension-type headache, and cluster headache and other trigeminal autonomic cephalalgias. Meanwhile, under secondary headaches, headaches which are attributed to the following are included: head and/or neck trauma, cranial or cervical vascular disorder, non-vascular intracranial disorder, a substance or its withdrawal, infection, disorder of cranium, neck, eyes, ears, nose, sinuses, teeth, mouth or other facial or cranial structures, and psychiatric disorder. And the last type includes cranial neuralgias, central and primary facial pain and other headaches.
Abortive Treatment
This is used to reduce headaches once they start. Medications included in this treatment are ergotamine, triptans that includes sumatriptan, rizatriptan, and naratriptan, and the newest class of abortives. These medications are not for long-term use, these are only most appropriate when used not more than two days a week in order to avoid the risk of rebound headaches.
Prophylactic Treatment
This is also known as preventive treatment and is meant only to prevent headaches from occurring and nit to stop them. Medications under this treatment are prescribed when headaches occur more than twice a week and it is extremely painful. These are also prescribed when other medications, which are used to treat headache symptoms, either do not work or could not be used. Some of these medications include calcium channel blockers, serotonin antagonists, and beta-blockers.
Over-the-counter Pain Medications
This is the most common type of headache relief that headache sufferers rely on since these can easily be obtained from the local drugstore. Over-the-counter remedies include acetaminophen, aspirin, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), like ibuprofen and naprosyn. These are used to relieve ordinary headaches and other headache symptoms.
Prescription medications
These are medications that you cannot just purchase once you feel that headache. These include medications which are also under the abortive treatment and analgesics that require prescriptions and include other NSAIDS, COX-2 inhibitors, neuroleptics, and opioids, or narcotic drugs.
Lifestyle Changes
Some lifestyle changes that you can make may be enough to give you headache relief. Avoiding the foods that are known to trigger migraines and other types of headache is one. You can also avoid doing the usual things that you do that cause you too much stress and after which you experience feeling pain on your neck and head. But if you can’t avoid them, certainly there is something that you can do in order for that activity not to cause you headache after. You can also try relaxing techniques like yoga and meditation to relieve you from stress that triggers headache.
Headache relief can be achieved easily if you rely on any of these treatment options. But still it is best to consult your physician for medical advice especially if you are already experiencing severe pain and it becomes unbearable for you.
